The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and its ensuing regulations require State Education Agencies (SEAs) to address in their State Plans a mechanism for ensuring that Local Education Agencies (LEAs) maintain appropriately qualified personnel to provide special education and related services for children and youth with disabilities who are served by public and private agencies. To ensure that paraprofessionals, educational interpreters for the deaf and hearing impaired or other assistants employed by public agencies are appropriately trained in accordance with guidelines established by the Arkansas Department of Education (ADE), Special Education Unit, the newly developed Special Health Care Needs Module will be presented via satellite at 34 regional locations listed on the attached registration form.

This training will allow paraprofessionals with public agencies to be trained in the Special Health Care Needs Paraprofessional Training Module, developed by the ADE, Special Education Unit. The paraprofessionals must have completed the Core Paraprofessional Training prior to attending this training. Each site will have a trained facilitator(s) that will assist with activities conducted during the distance learning training, including dissemination of pre- and post test activities for determination of competency acquisition.

Attached are two registration forms (One form indicates the sites for the training, and the second form is for listing the participants' names and addresses). For necessary materials to be prepared by the facilitators at the sites, paraprofessionals must pre-register to attend the one-day session. Please submit both registration forms listing all paraprofessionals (names printed clearly) representing a school district, educational cooperative or other agency. Upon the completion of the training, each paraprofessional will receive a certificate of completion in the Special Health Care Needs Paraprofessional Module, 0.6 CEUs, and be entered in the Arkansas Paraprofessional Registry maintained by the Special Education Unit,

Registration will be limited. Participants will be registered on a first come, first serve basis. The times for the training program are 8:00 A.M. - 3:30 P.M. Unless otherwise notified that the session site has reached its limit, the registered person(s) are to report to the site on August 17, 2000 by 8:00 a.m that he/she registered to attend.

Complete and return the attached registration forms no later than July 26, 2000.
