The Arkansas Department of Education is announcing the Request for Proposals for the Title IV Community Service Grant Program for Students Expelled or Suspended from School. There will be four funding periods: Summer of 2004; School Year of 2004-2005; Summer of 2005; and School Year of 2005-2006. The funds will be awarded through a competitive grant process based on the criteria listed in the Request for Proposals.
Title IV, Part A, Subpart 2, Section 4126, of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2002 (Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities) authorized state departments of education to “carry out programs under which students expelled or suspended from school are required to perform community service.”
The goal of this program is to provide suspended and expelled students with meaningful activities during their absence from regular school; to help them avoid negative behaviors; and to teach them the value of service to others and their communities.
Local Education Agencies (LEAs) that serve suspended and/or expelled students, or a school working with community-based organizations, whose mission includes developmental programs for students at risk, will be eligible to submit a proposal for one of the funding periods.
