The Arkansas Department of Education (ADE), Child Nutrition Unit is pleased to co-sponsor the upcoming “Moving Toward the Natural State of Health” Conference to be held August 10-11, 2004, at the Statehouse Convention Center, Little Rock.

According to Act 1220 of 2003, each school district is required to form a district School Nutrition and Physical Activity Advisory Committee for school year 2004-2005. This resource workshop can serve as part of an orientation for a school district’s School Nutrition and Physical Activity Advisory Committee.

Some highlights of the meeting include:

SCHOOL DISTRICT SELF-ASSESSMENT-
Dr. James Bogden, Project Director for Safe and Healthy Schools, National Association of State Boards of Education will assist schools in performing a self-assessment using the School Health Index and then lead them through policy development for developing a healthy school environment.

UPDATE ON PROVISIONS OF ACT 1220-
Sessions on Act 1220: Where We Are and Where We Are Going, including a panel discussion of the Child Health Advisory Committee Members.

BEST PRACTICES WORKING IN SCHOOLS-
“Food Pricing, Availability and Promotion to Increase Healthy Food Choices in Schools” will be presented by Simone French. Peter Cribb will present “Coordinated School Health: Simple Truths-Hidden Answers and a look at CATCH – A Coordinated Approach to Child Health”

This conference is open to superintendents, principals, teachers, community members, school nutrition professionals, school nurses, and parents. Members of the local school nutrition and physical activity advisory committees / teams are encouraged to participate.

Continuing professional education credit is being sought for teachers, school nurses, pharmacists, registered dietitians, health educators, social workers, and others. Call (501) 661-2622 to inquire if professional education credit is needed and credentialing organization / profession required by a participant is not listed.

Registration forms are available on-line at http://www.healthierchildren.org or see attachment below. FINAL REGISTRATION DEADLINE is July 19, 2004.

Rooms for the conference may be reserved at either the Wyndam Riverfront or the Peabody.

Wyndam Riverfront rates are $69.00 per room (1-2 people) per night with free parking and a free shuttle to the Convention Center. To ensure availability of rooms at the conference rate, reservations must be made by July 21. Call 501-371-9000 or 1-866-657-4458 (toll free)and state that the reservation is a part of the "Moving Toward the Natural State of Health" Conference.

Peabody conference rates are $72.00 per room per night (1-2 people) with parking available for $13.00 per day. To ensure availability of rooms at the conference rate, reservations must be made by July 10. Call 1-800-Peabody for Little Rock and state that the reservation is a part of the "Moving Toward the Natural State of Health" Conference.
