The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards has produced the attached chart of potential federal funding sources. Districts may wish to support local teachers in National Board candidacy through utilization of such funds since state funding is quite limited. A new candidate year begins in January for teachers pursuing candidacy in 2005-2006, with certification results available in November 2006. For additional information, see http://www.nbpts.org/candidates/guide/2_certglance.html. Districts may consider expenditures from professional development or National School Lunch Act (NSLA) funds from Act 59 of the Second Extraordinary Session of 2003 to support these activities.
Arkansas currently has over 300 2004-2005 National Board initial year candidates. In addition, there were just under 200 teachers in the process of candidacy in 2003-2004. These teachers now await certification results in November 2004.
