The Arkansas Department of Education, Special Education, will provide training on the use of the Indirect Services as a placement option for students with disabilities. Under this option, students with disabilities receive their instruction and services in the general education classroom with the assistance of a Consultant Teacher. This special education professional provides special education services by assisting and problem solving with the student's general education teacher/s on a regular basis.
A one day training will be provided November 17, 1999, at the Best Western InnTowne in Little Rock, Arkansas. The training will begin at 8:30 AM and conclude at 3:30 PM.
This Indirect Services Basic Training will focus on the regulations governing Indirect Services, roles and responsibilities of general and special education teachers involved with the services, and collaborative problem solving. Although geared toward professionals that have not attended a previous training, experienced Consultant Teachers may find it beneficial to attend with new partners.
Districts that choose to participate should send their personnel in "Indirect Services" building teams. These teams must consist of a special education teacher and at least one general educator. Since administrative support is critical to the success of this strategy, building administrators are highly encouraged to attend.
The training is provided to districts at no charge. Reimbursement for substitutes will be available if needed. To qualify for the reimbursement participants must attend the entire session. In addition, the building administrator must attend or provide a letter of support for the Indirect Services program. Mileage will also be paid for one car per district. Any additional expenses will be the responsibility of the participating school district.
